Jan 29, 2013. #7. I have sand for my corys to protect their barbels. If you add sand the sand will eventually end up under the gravel making a layer of sand and a layer of gravel (unless you mix it up a lot). To clean it I take the end of my gravel vacuum off and just use the tube so I don't suck up as much sand.
Sand is an attractive and cost-effective option for a variety of aquariums. Sand can be used as a substrate for many different types of fish, including freshwater and saltwater species. It can also be added to the bottom of an aquarium to create a natural filter for fish and invertebrates. In addition to being a great substrate, sand is also a ...

However, it's important to ensure that the sand you choose is safe for discus fish. Mixing different types of sand can add aesthetic value to your tank but be cautious when choosing colors as some may contain harmful chemicals. Additionally, depth plays a crucial role in keeping your discus happy and healthy. A shallow layer of about 1-2 ...
Aesthetics: Crushed coral offers a clean, ocean-like appeal to the tank, resembling the Oscar fish's natural dwelling. Waste Control: Crushed coral's weight prevents fish waste from blending with the substrate, promoting a cleaner tank. My recommendation: Estes Crushed Coral for Aquarium (link to Amazon). 2. River Rocks.
Dec 16, 2007. #10. That is a crushed coral. Exactly what I have in my SPS tank... and mine is also mixed with finer sand. The fine sand is the first layer (~3") and the top layer is the crushed coral. I had the fine sand first but my Tunzes keep blowing them away.. so I put a crushed coral layer on top and it stayed like that.
Aug 29, 2015. #6. I like the look of white and black sand mixed personally. Partly because of how my fish look with it imo but also partly because in both white and black sand alone I could see the dirt easier. darker color stuff shows on the like and lighter on the dark so with a mix of both it makes the dirt look a little less noticeable imo.
1. Pour the Sand into your Tank. You can simply cut off your sand pack and pour it into your aquarium. This is the easiest way to add sand. But doing this will make your tank cloudy. Atomic sand particles …

To mix black and white sand, you have to wash it first. Wash the sand separately with water 6 to 7 times. After that, lay the black sand first on the bottom. Then add a layer of white sand on top of it. Lastly, put down another layer of black sand. However, use one or two inches of sand … See more

Fishlore VIP. Apr 8, 2017. #3. Do you want it more white or more black? If I wanted it more white, I'd put 1 cup of white sand in a small container and then add 1/8 cup black sand. Put the top on the container and shake it well. If I thought I would like to go with a bit more black, I'd add another 1/8, put the top back on and shake again. You ...
Betta and guppies really shouldn't be in a tank together. Guppies may nip the bettas fins, or steal food, being much more active swimmers. Coupled with the guppies naturally bright colors, and you may very well end up with a stressed, agitated betta. It's best to leave them in separate tanks, if at all possible. Use pool filter sand to save ...

I'd think that if you had a lot more white sand than black it would just look like dirtier white sand. That's what I was worried about. There's somewhere between 40-50lbs of white sand. Both types have the same grain size. I did a little test and mixed some outside of the tank and it looked okay but can't tell for certain without it being in ...
You can mix substrates, but expect the finer grains to slowly migrate thought the spaces, and that you will end up wih the finer grain in the bottom and the larger grain on top. As to the fine grain sand in 5 gallon buckets from the 90 gallon fellow, I wouldn't recommend using it for several reasons.

Gravel. Smooth, natural appearance. Prevents debris from sinking into the substrate. Ideal for delicate fish like shrimp and loaches. Ideal substrate for most aquatic species. Works with all types of filtration systems. Hides visible debris better than sand. I remember setting up my first aquarium as a child.
Putting Them Together. Sand and gravel can be used together in aquariums, but if the gravel is put down first it will end up on top as the sand gradually settles to the bottom. Sand can't be used with gravel when using under-gravel filters as the motor won't be able to suck the water through both the gravel and the hard-packed sand.
Thread Starter. #16. With the gravel, just use the vac the way you normally would to suck up the dirt. On the sand side, wave the vac over the sand without actually touching it. It will stir up what's on top and you will be able to suck it up. I am going to use play sand with the tank I am setting up now.
