Secondary recycling, better known as mechanical recycling (or material recycling), is the process of recovering plastics for the re-use in manufacturing plastic products via mechanical means [4–7]. Mechanical recycling of plastics can only be performed on single-polymer plastic.
Secondary recycling requires sorting of polymer waste streams, reduction of polymer waste size, followed by extrusion. With proper control over processing conditions, many polymers can undergo several cycles of primary and secondary mechanical recycling without concern for loss of performance (Sections 7 and 11 ).
